wanting to add alcohol to both the cupcakes and frosting mixes. what alcohol goes well with both?

We wouldn't suggest adding alcohol to the cupcake's as it may cause problems for baking them but you can definately add alcohol to the frosting. Some suggestions are: Godiva chocolate liquor, Kahlua, rum, Frangelico. Stop by your local LCBO and speak with one of the friendly staff for other suggesetions.
