How do you know how to match wine with food? What goes with what?

Before you understand how to pair wine with food, you have to understand the art of wine itself. What type of weather did that vineyard get that year? Which region did it come from? What was the aging process? Kevin Zraly has written a fantastic book called "Windows on the World". This book breaks down the world of wine in a simple, easy way for "normal" people to read and understand. However, if you are not interested in reading in detail and just wanted a quick guide, there a few websites that I have listed. These websites will let you know which wine to have with salmon or with your pasta.
