In Ayurveda, Fasting is considered to be one of the ayurvedic remedies to cure different kinds of ailments and illnesses. The human body is brought into a state of inertia as reactions and impulses tend to slow down and lessen. The fasting therapy was approved by intellectuals like Socrates, Charaka and Aristotle. Fasting is recommended for diagnoses of ailments. Problems such as obesity can be controlled to an extent by fasting therapy planned by a physician.

Ayurveda doesnot recommend prolonged fasting as it can adversely affect the body through long resisted craving. Fasting should take place under the strict supervision of a medical personnel. The Tri-Dosha concept highly rules over the fasting practice and varies according to the particular dosha that rules the patient's health and body.

To elaborate, a person with vatta dosha (air and space acts predominantly over the body) should diet on a single foodand never fast on water. The Pitta person can fast on fruits and vegetable juices but not only on water which in case of Kapha people is opposite. Fasting on water is highly recommended for them. However for mixed constitutions, juice fasting is prescribed.

Fasting has a cleansing and purifying effect on the health. This method is by adopted by other medical science systems too. The diagnosis and tests of any ailments and conditions is analysed more effectively through this method. It has also been found effective in providing relief from fatigue and stress. The medical conditions such as mental disorders, insomnia, muscular spasms have been diagnosed through fasting.
